The Process

It looks like paint but it acts like armor!   It's tough.  It looks great.  And it lasts a long, long time.  Powder coating is a superior finish that's found on hundreds of products you come in contact with each day.  It makes products durable, attractive, and scratch-resistant, too.  Everyone has heard about it; if you're a motorsports fan and you can't get enough Biker Build-Offs, you've heard the term a thousand times.  But everyone still asks, so let's start with the first question we always get:   What the heck is powder coat?

Here's the 'official' answer:

Powder coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative and protective finish to a wide range of materials and products that are used by both industries and consumers. The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated. The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality, and attractive finish.

The powder coating process itself offers another advantage -- it is environmentally friendly...virtually pollution-free!   Unlike liquid paint, no solvents are used, so only negligible amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released into the air. In addition, unused or oversprayed powder can be recovered, so any waste is minimal and can be disposed of easily and safely.

Powder coating is the fastest-growing finishing technology in North America, representing over 10% of all industrial finishing applications.

How we do it:

Without giving too much away (we must honour the secrets given to us by The Dragon, after all), here is how we do it:

Sandblasting
  1. Applying powder
You bring us your rusty, nasty, vile piece (we do nice, clean, and new too!)...
  2. We scale, degrease, and sandblast as required using our blast cabinet.  For items larger that 5ft in length, we'll send the part to a local contractor that we trust to work to our exacting standards
  3. High—heat tape, plugs, and caps are employed to ensure that no powder is in or on any threads, grounding points, or gasket areas
  4. We suspend and coat your piece in our airflow controlled application booth, which uses the Devilbliss Clean AIR System
  5. We introduce your piece to 'The Dragon' for a light baking...

Why we do it:

Donnie Dort - Our Fearless Leader (that's him below, showing off a 'before and after'), has been seeking 'The Perfect Finish' for years, that's why he started Dragon Powder Coating:

Donnie shows off his parts

"After years of building different projects from old school cars to custom pedal bike choppers for my son, I was disappointed in the protection that paint offered to a lot of the parts that really stood out. Paint just didn't have what I was looking for; the durability, or the stop you in your tracks and make you say 'wow' factor. Years of painting car rims, and exhaust headers lead me to look for a new method of protection from brake dust and extreme heat.

Istarted Dragon Powder Coating because I found a product that could out last paint under all the harsh conditions from extreme heat and cold, to rock chips and abuse, and realzied that if I was looking for this kind of protection and style others must be as well.

Having started the business out of my home garage, the demand has grown for me to open up a full time shop and pursue this as a career. The uses for powder are endless, from saftey identification in an industrial or chemical setting to making that project car's engine bay really stand out. The sky is the limit on what we can do with it."
